Partnerships are starting to bloom: Visit Britain and the Japan National Tourism Organisation to sign an MOU on Olympics and Paralympics cooperations before BCCJ event on September 26. The UK Ambassador to Japan Tim Hitchens will open the event following the signing of the MOU.

Japan is gearing up to host both the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and just one year later, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Meanwhile, against the successful backdrop of London 2012 and next year's Rugby World Cup, the UK and its companies have proved they have what it takes to host global mega sporting events.  

On 26 September Christopher Rodrigues CBE, VisitBritain's global Chairman will share his insights into how firms and host nations can make such events work for them.

Immediately before this event, to be opened by the UK Ambassador to Japan Tim Hitchens, an MOU will be signed between VisitBritain and the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), signifying their commitment to Olympic and tourism co-operation.

The session will go on to include a Q&A session where you can find out how best to maximise the opportunities presented by this MOU. 

Mr Rodrigues will be visiting Japan to attend the Japan Association of Travel Agent (JATA)'s ‘Tourism Expo'.

Christopher Rodrigues became Chairman of VisitBritain on 1 January 2007 and Chairman of International Personal Finance in July of the same year.

He is pro-bono Chairman of The Windsor Leadership Trust and The Almeida Theatre, and an advisor to Monitise plc.   He is on the Council, and a Trustee, of the National Trust and is an Executive Committee member of the World Travel and Tourism Council.  In August 2013 he became the Chairman of the British Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association, and in January 2014 he became Chairman of Openwork Holdings Ltd.

His previous career includes terms as President and CEO of Visa International; Group Chief Executive of Bradford and Bingley, Group Chief Executive at Thomas Cook and various senior positions at American Express.   He was a NED at Ladbrokes plc (formerly Hilton Group) from 2003 until 1st May 2013, was a founder NED of the Financial Services Authority (1997-2003) and spent the early part of his career at McKinsey and Co. 

Christopher is a graduate of Cambridge University and the Harvard Business School.  He rowed for Cambridge in the 1970 and 1971 Boat Races, is a past-Chairman of Leander Club and is a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta.  He was made Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey in 2009 and a Visiting Professor at Cranfield School of Management in 2010.  He was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University of Surrey (DUniv) in April 2013.

Christopher was made a Commander of the British Empire in the 2007 New Year Honours list for services to British business interests and charitable works in the UK and USA.


The VisitBritain board is led by Chairman, Christopher Rodrigues, CBE. There are six other members, five of whom are appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and one by the Welsh Assembly. The Chairmen of VisitEngland and VisitScotland sit on the board in an ex-officio capacity and a small number of observers attend the board by invitation.
