The Paralympics: Transforming Perceptions and Inspiring Excellence
A joint Global Sporting Event hosted by the BCCJ and British Embassy Tokyo, welcoming Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of the British Paralympic Association (BPA) and Andy Barrow, Paralympian and inspirational speaker.
In London 2012, Paralympians were celebrated as heroes, and Rio 2016 was ParalympicsGB's most successful Games ever, winning an outstanding total of 147 medals and securing second place on the medal table. This incredible sporting success has been a catalyst for a wide range of inspirational activity and positive change on a global level.
Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of the British Paralympic Association (BPA) wants to see this catalyst being used by future host countries to improve facilities, coaching and access to Paralympic sport and – beyond that – to use it to transform attitudes towards people with disabilities in general, and to
create a lasting legacy.
In the run up to Tokyo 2020, Japan is eager to learn from the successes of London 2012 and Rio 2016 and is already engaging decision makers in government and other key public and private bodies to ensure the positive impact of the Paralympic movement is understood and embraced.
Hollingsworth will address the many challenges faced by a host country, and will share best practice on issues such as how to change attitudes; improve accessibility; increase media coverage; boost ticket sales; raise athlete profiles; engage the public and commercial and other partners; and ensure smarter, more effective business planning and delivery.
Andy Barrow, Paralympian and inspirational speaker, will draw on his experience as a Triple Paralympian, three-time European gold medallist and former captain of the Great Britain wheelchair rugby team, to inspire and motivate the BCCJ audience.
Barrow will talk about the Paralympics as a showcase for human strength and achievement - focused on ability and not disability. The speaker will highlight the role of hard work and perseverance in attaining success and explain how it is possible to triumph over adversity. "Everyone has the qualities they need to be the best they can be, but nothing will change unless you change it," he says.
Indeed, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics have the potential to transform Japan into a society that promotes sustained acceptance and integration. Let sport be an agent of change!
