2020 Paralympics: Engaging the Public
This is a joint Global Sporting Event hosted by the BCCJ and ACCJ.
In the run-up to Tokyo 2020, Japan's awareness of and enthusiasm for the Paralympics is growing visibly. This month, Tokyo Governer Yuriko Koike joined the No Limits Special 2017, a two-day event at Ueno Park to promote the Paralympic Games, where she tried out wheelchair tennis and a cyber wheel used by wheelchair runners.
At the same time, organisations such as The Nippon Foundation Paralympic Support Center have launched educational initiatives for students and adults through which instructors with impairments deliver lectures and hands-on parasports sessions allowing participants not only to gain insights into a new world of thrilling sports, but to transform their attitudes towards disability and to develop completely new perspectives about society and human potential.
At this awareness-raising event, the BCCJ and ACCJ will welcome Mr. Yasushi Yamawaki (President, Japan Paralympic Committee) and Ms. Eri Yamamoto-MacDonald (Project Manager), both from the Nippon Foundation Paralympic Support Center, to talk about the power of parasports, how to better engage the public and commercial partners through parasports experiences, and how the Paralympics showcases human strength and achievement by focusing on ability and not disability.
BCCJ Global Sporting Events
Since April 2012, the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan has been running a D&I programme designed to promote greater understanding of, and develop support mechanisms for, the growth of diverse groups in the workplace in Japan, including:
- People with Disabilities
- LGBTQ community
- Generation Y/Millennials
We believe diversity to be vital for the future growth and sustainability of the Japanese and global economy. In the run-up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, the BCCJ supports the British Paralympic Association and organisations in Japan to collectively harness the positive momentum of the Paralympic Games and the success of the athletes to change societal attitudes to disability.
