Organisational change occurs when a company makes a transition from its current state to a desired future state. Managing organisational change is the process of planning and implementing change so as to minimise employee resistance and cost to the organisation whilst simultaneously maximising the effectiveness of the change effort.

Change within an organisation is often made by leadership working with a long-term vision for the company as opposed to employees whose horizons may not stretch as far. In order to secure the successful implementation of change, it is important to include and involve those people in the organisation who have a shorter-term agenda in order to help them better understand and value the necessity for change.

Organisational change can be met with internal resistance and negativity. Strong leaders know that it is impossible to be liked by everyone, but implementing an unpopular change, whether due to technological advances, M&A, or the economic environment, can prove challenging even for the most experienced and competent of leaders.

How do you incentivise people to change, particularly if they might not be part of the end result? How do you communicate the benefits and rationale for the change, and effectively manage employees through it whilst retaining trust, credibility and respect within the organisation? How do you spot potential 'stealth bombers' who may quietly sabotage progress?

About the speaker:

Miriam Mulcahy is a board level advisor with a reputation for driving change within large scale and entrepreneurial  businesses. She has a track record in adapting strategy, business models and organisation to digital channels and has delivered successfully in resistant and challenging environments.  Prior to coming to Japan, she was an Adjunct Professor with Hult International Business School lecturing on Leadership and Change Management.
