AI Under the Hood: turning water into gold

It seems impossible to go a day in Tokyo without hearing the word 'AI'. Are you up to speed?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning (the acquisition of information and rules for using the information), reasoning (using rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions) and self-correction.

Fear is rippling throughout the public domain about AI replacing humans in the workplace. And the media enjoys peddling improbable expectations about how it will change life in general.

On March 12 at the BCCJ event space, we aim to bring AI a bit closer to reality . . .

AI Under the Hood: turning water into gold

Our speaker, Darren Cook, says:

In the first half of this talk we will look into the current state of text-based AI (virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa, chatbots, machine translation, search, fake news detection, etc.). I promise that how it works is closer to stage magic than Harry Potter magic. We will also discuss what is required in order for AI to become even more useful to humanity.

The second half of the talk will focus on one of those needs, data, which has been called ’the new oil’. But, rather than oil, I will compare data to water. We will sing in the rain that is Open Data, and look at communal projects such as Wikidata, as well as Open Government Data, taking a closer look at the offerings from Japan and the U.K.

The session will wrap up with a hands-on exercise, exploring some of the above data sets, where you will learn how to query and search them, and perhaps even find data sources that are of use to your own business. Bringing your computer would be helpful, but for those who wish to travel light, a tablet or smartphone will be okay.

There will be plenty of time for questions.
