Take Action on International Women's Day
March 1, 2017
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Since April 2012, the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan has been running a D&I programme designed to promote greater understanding of, and develop support mechanisms for, the growth of diverse groups in the workplace in Japan, including:
- People with Disabilities
- LGBTQ community
- Generation Y/Millennials
We believe diversity to be vital for the future growth and sustainability of the Japanese and global economy.
On International Women's Day, a global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets and theatric performances and more.
As well as the many BCCJ members who focus on mainstreaming equality, diversity and inclusion in their organisations, the BCCJ is proud to work with a strong network of partners and members who are actively involved in raising political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide, and who work to forge a more inclusive and gender-equal world.
Mums in Business Tokyo
Mums in Business Tokyo is a group of professional women who meet to network and exchange insights, share advice on balancing a career and a family, raise awareness of women's issues and promote gender parity in Japan.
On March 7th, Mums in Business Tokyo is hosting the IWD event, 'Spotlight on Japan 2017'. Participation is encouraged from all in Tokyo who care about equality and diversity, men and women alike. The event is an excellent platform for men and women to exchange information, network, and celebrate their achievements, best practice, small victories and innovations. Sign up HERE
FEW: For Empowering Women in Japan
FEW is an exceptionally active and ever-growing Tokyo-based non-profit business and social networking organization whose mission is to “enable internationally-minded women in Japan to achieve their full professional and personal potential.” The group holds regular networking meetings and events. Information about the organisation's IWD meeting "The Many Shades of Harassment" to be held on March 9th can be found HERE
The BCCJ encourages everyone to get involved in International Women's Day 2017. As the journalist Gloria Steinem says, "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights."
***HOW YOU CAN TAKE ACTION***
1) Run your own, or join a #BeBoldForChange IWD campaign
One of the most powerful ways you can influence how quickly gender parity is achieved is through championing a #BeBoldForChange campaign within your own organisation.
2) Host a #BeBoldForChange IWD event
Invite your speaker/s to articulate and explain that exact moment when they themselves took bold action to help improve or develop an aspect of their own livelihood, career or business - or that of another woman's, or women's status overall.
3) Social share your support
Use the hashtag #BeBoldForChange in your calls for action/gender parity on your communication channels
4) Secure executive statements of support
Submit an approved and authorised #BeBoldForChange statement of support from your leaders (celebrities, corporate chairpersons and CEOs, government officials, charity heads, business and community leaders) - for possible promotion and amplification via the IWD website and social media channel.
