UK firms attend leading tech tradeshow

British firms flew the flag for UK innovation this week at CEATEC, one of the largest tradeshows in Asia related to cyber-physical systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT). They joined the UK Pavilion hosted by the British Embassy, Tokyo in the exhibition’s Co-Creation Park as part of a UK Technology trade mission to Japan.

The seven firms, each offering cutting-edge technology in IoT, AI, Big Data, 5G, cybersecurity, blockchain or AR/VR, were Blue Prism, Darktrace, Imagination Technologies, Quortus, RS Components, Ubisense and VE. Representatives of each had an opportunity to present their firm’s innovative solutions at a UK technology seminar at the pavilion.

Held over four days at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, the exhibition is an acronym for Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies. It brings together CPS and IoT technologies from around the world to facilitate the exchange of information and the creation of business opportunities. Organisers are Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, the Communications and Information Network Association of Japan and the Computer Software Association of Japan, with support from Japan’s ministries and business organisations.

Under the theme of “Connecting Society, Co-creating the Future,” CEATEC 2018 was designed to facilitate the realisation of Japan’s proposed Society 5.0, an ultra-smart society designed to further economic development and the solution of social problems. As such, industry experts predicted it would attract record numbers. Last year, CEATEC welcomed some 150,000 visitors, 660 exhibitors, 1,500 media and 140 start-ups.

As part of the tradeshow’s official programme, AJ Van Bochoven, head of strategic innovation at Cambridge Consultants—a UK leader in disruptive innovation and technology-based consulting—gave a keynote speech on the potential of using UK technologies to realise Society 5.0. Colin Mason, technology specialist for the Department for International Trade at the British Embassy, Tokyo, also gave a speech, outlining business opportunities that UK technology can offer Japanese firms.

To showcase the best of British hospitality, embassy staff handed out beers made by UK firm BrewDog as part of a Happy Hour session to promote relaxed and amiable networking.
