The Memorial to William Adams (Miura Anjin) - Opportunity to Attend
July 5, 2019
In 1613 Japanese speaking William Adams was the joint negotiator, along with the visiting Captain John Saris of the East India Company, of the very first Japan-British diplomatic and trade agreement. This achievement resonates with the BCCJ, and the British business community as a whole, as he was the proximate cause of the current bilateral business relationship with Japan
Adams was also the first Englishman to land in Japan in 1600, and later achieved samurai status, which was bestowed by the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Due to fluency in Japanese this Englishman from a humble background became principal interpreter for Tokugawa Ieyasu, and dependable adviser in respect of foreign affairs.
All this, and more, features in an article published in the December 2018 edition of Acumen. Additionally, the William Adams Club are confident that the remains of Adams have at last been found in Hirado, the location of his death virtually 400 years ago. DNA has been successfully extracted.
This latest development poignantly arose shortly after the WIlliam Adams Club had organized a memorial sculpture to be erected, with kind permission, in a prominent location at the British embassy on the 16th of May 2020, which precisely commemorates the 400th anniversary of his death on 16th May 1620.
In late afternoon on the 16th of May there will be an unveiling ceremony for about 30 minutes, followed by a celebratory party at No.1 House. Included will be a non-denominational tea ceremony performed by Akira Matsura Esq., who is the 41st head of the Matsura clan, praying for the soul of Adams. His ancestors held the Hirado fief, and they both supported Adams and protected him from adversity.
Funds are essentially needed now to cover the substantial cost of the white marble sculpture, the unveiling ceremony, and party consumables for the subsequent celebratory event at No.1 House. BCCJ members WISHING TO ATTEND these events are requested to donate ¥20,000 soonest for one person, and ¥27,500 if a spouse or partner also attends (the additional amount being for added catering costs).
Those interested in attending should email directly to Robin Maynard - Founder & President of The William Adams Club - firstname.lastname@example.org. He will provide guidance on the payment requirements and reservation system for Saturday 16th May 2020.
